Creighton vs Syracuse Soccer Preview

Third-ranked Syracuse faces unranked Creighton for a spot in the national championship match on Friday in Cary, North Carolina.

“We always believed in this group. We always knew we had the capability of doing special things,” Creighton coach Johnny Torres said via the Omaha World-Herald. “And I’m glad we’re at where we were today.”

Syracuse advanced past the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Vermont. Curt Calov and Levonte Johnson scored goals for the Orange in the victory. Syracuse previously beat Penn and Cornell in the tournament.

“I think both teams have grown and got better,” Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said of the Vermont rematch via Sports Illustrated’s All Syracuse. “They were missing a couple of their players. Look, Alex Nagy is a difference maker for them. And in college soccer he is terrific. He caused us problems today. I thought Amferny got around the ball and tried to make life difficult for him. But it’s the same for us as well.”

Creighton has a seven-match winning streak, and four of those wins came against ranked opponents. The Bluejays ousted Duke 3-2 to advance to the semifinals. Duncan McGuire scored the firsts goal for Creighton and goalkeeper Paul Kruse made eight saves.

“I understand that Duke allowed only eight goals in the season, but that was our 63rd goal this season,” Torres said via the Omaha World-Herald. “I think we pack a good offensive punch and I’m glad we were able to get to good spots.”

Getting past Orange goalkeeper Russell Shealy could pose a challenge for Creighton. Syracuse has a 11 shutouts and allows .597 goals per match.

The winner between Creighton and Syracuse will take on the Pittsburgh and Indiana winner for the title match. Syracuse made it to the finals of the College Cup once in 2015, and Creighton made it once in 2000.
