Edwards rushed 14 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns and brought in one of two targets for three yards in the Chargers' 34-27 win over the Broncos on Thursday night. Edwards was the surprising leader of the Chargers' ground attack Thursday night with his highest carry total since Week 2 and best rushing yardage tally of the campaign. The veteran back also flashed his signature red-zone prowess by recording one- and five-yard rushing scores in the first and third quarters, respectively. Edwards' rookie backfield mate Kimani Vidal carried just five times and didn't see any targets, so the former should head into a Week 17 road matchup against the Patriots on Saturday, Dec. 28 with the lead-back job in hand.

Gus Edwards Latest News
Excels as lead back Thursday
Struggles in one-sided loss
Edwards rushed eight times for 23 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 40-17 loss to the Buccaneers. Edwards couldn't get anything going on the ground, resulting in a mediocre 2.9 yards per carry. The power back isn't tailored for an offense trying to come back from a large deficit like the Chargers were Sunday. The 29-year-old has struggled in three starts since taking over for J.K. Dobbins (knee), averaging a meager 30.3 yards per game over that span. Edwards needs to show some life against the Broncos on Thursday or he may begin losing snaps to rookie Kimani Vidal.
Scores touchdown in loss
Edwards tallied 10 carries for 36 yards and a touchdown in the 19-17 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday. The bruising running back scored just his second touchdown of the season. For a second consecutive week Edwards led the team in carries, but rookie Kimani Vidal was also a factor, tallying eight carries for 34 yards. The backfield breakdown is worth monitoring with J.K. Dobbins (knee) still on injured reserve for at minimum two more weeks, but it's becoming clear Los Angeles' rushing attack just doesn't have the same gusto it did when Dobbins was one of the bell cows.
Not used much in win
Edwards tallied six carries for 32 yards and also caught his lone reception for one yard in the 17-13 win over the Falcons on Sunday. At least for one week, Edwards narrowly held the lead in total touches over rookie Kimani Vidal, who registered just four carries for 20 yards in a weird game script that saw the Chargers trail the time-of-possession battle by nearly 12 minutes. Obviously neither running back had an exceptional fantasy day, but it's worth noting Hassan Haskins was the clear third back as predicted while fumbling on his lone carry of the day. Edwards, Vidal and company won't have it much easier next week against a tough Chiefs defense in Kansas City.
Looks headed for Week 13 start
Edwards is expected to step in as the Chargers' starting running back in Sunday's game against the Falcons with J.K. Dobbins considered unlikely to play after spraining his left knee in Monday's 30-23 loss to the Ravens, afdsa Edwards has technically started in two of his seven appearances on the season, but Dobbins has been the clear lead option out of the Los Angeles backfield, besting Edwards in both rushing volume (766 yards and eight touchdowns to Edwards' 206 and one) and efficiency (4.8 yards per carry to 3.3 YPC). With Rapoport relaying that Dobbins' availability beyond the Week 13 contest in Atlanta is up in the air, Edwards could be in store for a multi-game run as Los Angeles' primary ballcarrier. However, Dobbins' expected absence is unlikely to open up more work on passing downs for Edwards, with those reps instead likely to go to rookie Kimani Vidal, whose 5-foot-8, 215-pound frame and superior speed makes him a strong candidate to fill a change-of-pace role. The Chargers also have Hassan Haskins on hand, but like Edwards, the 6-foot-2, 228-pound Haskins is better suited for early down or short-yardage work.
Short TD in place of starter
Edwards rushed nine times for 11 yards and a touchdown without recording a reception in Monday's 30-23 loss to the Ravens. Starter J.K. Dobbins went down with a knee injury in the first half of Monday's narrow defeat, affording Edwards extra play in the second half. The 29-year-old Edwards didn't post big numbers outside of a short touchdown run, but he could be worth adding if Dobbins is forced to miss time. If that becomes the case, Edwards would make a great add in leagues where he is available ahead of next Sunday's tilt against Atlanta.
Not involved much in win
Edwards tallied six carries for 27 yards in the 34-27 win over the Bengals on Sunday. J.K. Dobbins once again saw the lion's share of the workload (11 carries, 56 yards and two touchdowns) and even Hassan Haskins was given multiple goal-to-go totes, only for the second-year back to flounder with the opportunity. As a result, Edwards' fantasy value is likely dependent on the health of Dobbins, who has already surpassed his career high in carries (134) and has under four yards a carry in four of his past six contests.
Cleared for Week 11
Edwards (ankle) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday night's game against the Bengals after practicing fully Friday. Edwards was on the field for 15 snaps and logged 10 carries for 55 yards in his return from a four-game absence in this past Sunday's 27-17 win over the Titans. While the running back was limited at practice Wednesday and Thursday, his return to a full session Friday paves the way for him to be available this weekend. Though Edwards isn't a factor in the Chargers' passing attack, he figures to earn enough carries alongside J.K. Dobbins (39 snaps, 15 carries in Week 10) going forward to merit attention in deeper fantasy formats.
Limited at practice Wednesday
Edwards (ankle) was limited at practice Wednesday. In his return from a four-game absence due to an ankle injury, Edwards logged 15 snaps, while carrying the ball 10 times for 55 yards in a 27-17 win over the Titans on Sunday. With no reported setbacks, it's plausible that Edwards' limitations Wednesday were a case of workload management in the wake of his prior layoff. The running back now has two more chances to upgrade to full practice participation ahead of Sunday night's game against the Bengals.
