Dropped by K.C.
The Chiefs waived Hendershot on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Hendershot was traded from Dallas to Kansas City in late August made his Chiefs debut in Week 2, playing seven special-teams snaps and failing to record a single stat. With Hendershot being waived Monday, the Chiefs' tight-end room now consists of Travis Kelce, Noah Gray and Jared Wiley.
Not playing Thursday
Hendershot (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's regular-season opener against the Ravens. Hendershot was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with the Cowboys on Aug. 27. He's the fourth tight end on Kansas City's depth chart behind Travis Kelce, Noah Gray and Jared Wiley. Hendershot's next chance at making his Chiefs debut will come against the Bengals on Sept. 15.
Traded to KC
The Cowboys are trading Hendershot to the Chiefs for a conditional seventh-round pick, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. It was previously reported that Dallas was waiving the tight end, but the Chiefs apparently were interested and made a small offer to ensure he wouldn't land with a team that had higher waiver priority. Hendershot now slots in at the bottom of Kansas City's depth chart, potentially competing with rookie Jared Wiley for the No. 3 TE role.
Waived by Dallas
The Cowboys waived Hendershot on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Hendershot caught on as an undrafted rookie in 2022 and made 25 regular-season appearances for Dallas over the last two years. He was said to be competing for a significant role last summer but ended up a distant third behind Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker in the Cowboys' TE room.
Suits up for preseason finale
Hendershot caught his only target for a 10-yard gain in Saturday's 26-19 preseason loss to the Chargers. The third-year tight end has been dealing with a shoulder injury for most of training camp, but Hendershot was able to play in the Cowboys' preseason finale and haul in his lone pass late in the first quarter. With Jake Ferguson and 2023 second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker locked in atop the tight end depth chart, Hendershot is in a fierce battle with John Stephens, Brevyn Spann-Ford and others for one of the team's final roster spots.
Unavailable Wednesday
Hendershot was unavailable for the Cowboys' practice Wednesday due to a shoulder injury, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Hendershot was forced to sit out the team's "mock game" at practice as the Cowboys gear up for their first preseason contest Sunday on the road versus the Rams. The tight end will look to get back on the practice field as soon as possible, though he may not be able to go Sunday depending on the severity of his shoulder issue.
Participates in drills Friday
Hendershot (ankle) was seen participating in 7-on-7 drills at practice Friday, Nick Harris and Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site reports. Hendershot missed nine regular-season games in 2023 due to a lingering ankle injury, and he opted to undergo surgery in February. The third-year tight end out of Indiana appears to have fully recovered from the procedure, and he looks to be competing with John Stephens for the No. 3 tight end role behind Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker.
Making gradual progress
Hendershot has been easing back into action following offseason ankle surgery, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports. Hendershot underwent ankle surgery following the close of the 2023 season and isn't yet back up to full speed. He's expected to fill a depth role at tight end for Dallas in the coming campaign.
