Jones completed 11 of 18 passes for 138 yards and two interceptions in Saturday's 28-10 preseason loss to the Texans. He gained 12 yards on his lone carry. The Giants' first-team offense stayed on the field for the entire first half, giving Jones plenty of reps in his first game action since he suffered a torn ACL in Week 9 of last season. The 27-year-old quarterback predictably looked rusty and threw two bad picks on back-to-back possessions, one of which came from his own end zone and was returned five yards for a touchdown by Jalen Pitre. Jones had some good moments too though, including a 44-yard connection with Darius Slayton in the second quarter that set up a one-yard TD plunge for Devin Singletary. The Giants play one more exhibition contest next Saturday against the Jets, but it's not yet clear if Jones will suit up for it, or if he won't be under center again until Week 1 against the Vikings.

Daniel Jones Latest News
Rusty in return to game action
Set to play in second preseason game
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that Jones will likely play in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports. Jones received full medical clearance ahead of training camp after completing his recovery from November surgery to repair an ACL tear, but the Giants nonetheless chose to hold him out of their 14-3 win over the Lions in the preseason opener Thursday. No. 2 quarterback Drew Lock received the start and suffered a hip injury that will keep him from suiting up against the Texans, so Tommy DeVito now stands to operate as the top backup to Jones on Saturday. Daboll didn't go into specifics regarding how long Jones might stay in the game against the Texans, but the 27-year-old signal-caller should at least get a series or two.
Not expected to play Thursday
Jones isn't expected to play in Thursday's preseason opener against Detroit, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. The same is true for most of the Giants' other starters, including new No. 1 receiver Malik Nabers. Raanan notes that the second week of the preseason, against Houston, is when the Giants are most likely to play starters. There haven't been any reports of setbacks with Jones' surgically repaired knee.
Full go for start of camp
Coach Brian Daboll confirmed Wednesday that Jones (knee) is cleared for full-team drills and will lead the first-team offense at training camp, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports. Daboll even said Jones is "getting all the reps" with the first-team offense, essentially confirming that the 27-year-old will be New York's Week 1 starter. However, Daboll didn't shut down the possibility of Jones being benched later in the season to avoid future injury guarantees in his contract, instead telling reporters that any such consideration is a "ways down the road," per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. The combination of Jones' rushing ability and an improved receiving corps in New York could make him a surprisingly useful second QB in fantasy leagues, but he should probably be dropped down the rankings in formats that put a premium on late-season production. In addition to the risk of a situation like Russell Wilson's in Denver late last year, there's always the possibility Jones is simply benched in favor of Drew Lock for performance reasons, not to mention concerns about Jones' rushing production dropping after an ACL tear and lengthy rehab process.
Will be active for training camp
Jones (knee) won't be placed on the PUP list and will be active from the start of training camp next week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Jones said early Tuesday during an appearance on the Simms Complete podcast that he's had no setbacks in his recovery from last November's ACL surgery, and the Giants' decision not to place him on the PUP list essentially confirms that. This news means the QB is unlikely to have any limitations in preparing for the upcoming campaign and should be ready to go as New York's Week 1 starter. Jones will lead a new-look Giants offense that lost Saquon Barkley in free agency and Darren Waller to retirement in the offseason while adding new first-string RB Devin Singletary and exciting rookie Malik Nabers, who is slated to be the team's No. 1 wideout.
No real setbacks in recovery
Jones (knee) said Tuesday during an appearance on the "Simms Complete" podcast that he has had a "pretty smooth process" and "no real setbacks" in his recovery from the ACL surgery he underwent in November, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports. "At this point, I'm doing pretty much everything -- running, cutting, everything I need to do," Jones said. The quarterback didn't explicitly say that he's been medically cleared for the start of training camp next week, but he previously said in June that he expects to be on the field. Once he's cleared for 11-on-11 contact drills, a healthy Jones will look to prove that he's the Giants' long-term answer at quarterback. The team eschewed using the No. 6 overall pick in April's draft on a signal-caller and instead selected wideout Malik Nabers, and the front office appears to be betting that the addition of a dynamic receiver and better health from the offensive line will be enough to prop up the offense. Jones is entering the second season of the four-year, $160 million contract he signed in March 2023, and if the Giants elect to go in a different direction at quarterback following the 2024 campaign, the team would incur only $22.2 million in dead money by cutting him.
Plans to be ready for training camp
Jones (knee) isn't participating in 11-on-11 drills at June minicamp but said Tuesday that he expects to be ready for the first day of training camp, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. Jones said his right knee feels "really good" coming off ACL surgery, and that his cuts now feel cleaner than they did earlier in spring activities. Back in OTAs, Jones managed to shed his knee brace and take part in some 7-on-7 drills, so by all metrics his recovery progress remains encouraging. The Giants remain committed to Jones as an uncontested starter with Drew Lock positioned in a clear backup role, but this could well be a make-or-break season for the 2019 first-round pick.
Not quite ready for 11-on-11s.
Jones (knee) won't do team drills at June minicamp but may be ready by training camp, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports. Updates this spring suggest Jones' recovery is coming along well, with the QB saying in late May that he anticipates starting Week 1. He participated in some 7-on-7 drills at OTAs and has already shed his knee brace during workouts. For now, Drew Lock will continue taking most of the first-team QB reps in 11-on-11s.
Expects to be ready by Week 1
Jones (knee) said Thursday he anticipates starting Week 1, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports. Jones has been participating in 7-on-7 drills at OTAs and said "I don't have any doubt about it" when asked whether he'd suit up to take on the Vikings in Week 1. Additionally, he's already shed his knee brace in workouts, and all signs are that his recovery from a right ACL tear is proceeding smoothly. Jones signed a four-year, $160 million extension last offseason, but that may not give him significant job security if he logs an uninspiring 2024 campaign given both his injury history, and his terrible start to the 2023 season. It may not even be out of the realm of possibility that Drew Lock pushes for the Giants' starting gig, should he log a strong offseason.
