Fournette is visiting with the Colts on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Fournette couldn't find a home until the end of October last season, when he signed with the Bills, only appearing in two regular-season games. The veteran running back may have lost a step on the ground, but he was at least a capable receiver out of the backfield when he was with Tampa Bay in 2022, recording 73 catches on 83 targets for 523 yards, including three touchdowns. The potential addition of the LSU product would likely land him on the practice squad, but ultimately working to surpass Tyler Goodson, and possibly Trey Sermon, on the team's positional depth chart behind clear lead back, Jonathan Taylor.
Motivated, hopes to sign soon
Fournette is 'motivated' to continue his NFL career and plans to sign with a new team before the start of the 2024 NFL season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Fournette is now four years removed from his last 1,000-yard rushing season, though in 2021 and 2022 he did surpass 1,000 yards from scrimmage with Tampa Bay, in large part due to his notable role in the receiving game. Last year, the 29-year-old veteran appeared in two games for the Bills as a depth piece, before returning to the team's practice squad during the playoffs. Fournette still boasts a versatile enough skillset to carve out a role in a backfield light on depth, but at this stage in his career it's unlikely he secures enough touches for fantasy relevance without injuries ahead of him, and an ideal landing spot.
Joins Buffalo's practice squad
The Bills will see how Fournette fares during his first week of practice with the team, but if he picks up the playbook quickly and impresses during his time on the field, he could be elevated from the practice squad or even signed to the 53-man roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Bengals. Though he served as a lead back in each of his first six NFL seasons split between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, Fournette will likely be primarily competing with Latavius Murray for the No. 2 role behind James Cook while Damien Harris (concussion) is on injured reserve. Fournette brings superior pass-catching skills to the table, but Murray has historically been a tougher runner between the tackles. However, Murray is averaging just 3.6 yards per carry on 40 totes this season, so the 28-year-old Fournette could have an opening to steal work from him on early downs as well as passing downs.
Set to join Buffalo
The terms of Fournette's contract aren't known, and he could initially land on the Bills' practice squad rather than the 53-man roster. Regardless, Fournette could be ready to make his Bills debut Week 9 against the Bengals, as the team is need of additional depth behind top back James Cook while Damien Harris (concussion) is on injured reserve. A popular check-down target in Tampa Bay for Tom Brady last season, Fournette set career highs in receptions (73), receiving yards (523) and receiving touchdowns (three), but he saw a steep decline in efficiency on the ground, averaging just 3.5 yards on 189 carries. Once he gets acclimated in Buffalo, Fournette could challenge Latavius Murray for the top backup role behind Cook.
