Marcus Smart Latest News
Officially out
Smart (illness) won't play in Wednesday's game against the 76ers. Smart was termed doubtful ahead of the contest, so it's no surprise to see him inactive. With John Konchar (illness) and Vince Williams (ankle) also sidelined, expect Jaylen Wells and Luke Kennard to see plenty of action. Smart's next chance to play will come Saturday at Chicago.
Doubtful for Wednesday
Smart (illness) is doubtful for Wednesday's game against the 76ers. It appears that Smart will likely sit for the third game in a row as he remains under the weather. Vince Williams (ankle) is out and John Konchar (illness) is doubtful, meaning we could see a lot of Jake LaRavia and Luke Kennard on Wednesday.
Won't play Tuesday
Smart (illness) is out for Tuesday's game against the Nuggets. Smart has struggled to stay healthy this season and will miss an eighth contest of a possible 10 since Oct. 31. His next chance to play will come against Philadelphia on Wednesday in the second half of a back-to-back set.
Questionable for Tuesday
Smart (illness) is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Nuggets. Smart is in danger of missing his second straight game due to an illness. He recently made his return to game action following two weeks off due to an ankle injury, so the veteran is struggling to stay on the court. Even if he's cleared to suit up, Smart will likely operate off the bench Tuesday.
Won't play Sunday
Smart (illness) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Nuggets. Smart has been a mainstay on the injury report this year and will miss another matchup due to an illness. The 30-year-old has struggled to begin the 2024-25 campaign, during which he's appeared in seven regular-season outings and has averaged 7.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds while shooting only 30.0 percent from the field across 20.1 minutes per game. With Smart and Ja Morant (hip) ruled out, Scotty Pippen and Jaylen Wells should start in the backcourt, and Luke Kennard will likely see an uptick in playing time off the bench.
Doubtful for Sunday
Smart (illness) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Nuggets. Smart returned Wednesday from a six-game absence due to a left ankle injury and has played in each of the Grizzlies' last two games. However, he is now feeling under the weather and it seems unlikely he'll play Sunday. With Smart doubtful and Ja Morant (hip) already ruled out, Scotty Pippen and Jaylen Wells will start in the backcourt and Luke Kennard will see an uptick in minutes off the bench.
Strong production in return
Smart (ankle) tallied 15 points (3-5 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 7-8 FT), six assists, two rebounds, one steal and one block across 23 minutes off the bench in Wednesday's 128-123 loss to the Lakers. Memphis was still without six players due to injury Wednesday, but Smart's return from a six-game absence due to an ankle sprain provided a lift. Though he was deployed off the bench Wednesday, Smart delivered his best all-around performance of the season and could reclaim his spot on the top unit and see his minutes pick up as he becomes further removed from the ankle injury. Smart may be worthy of at least a cursory pickup in 12-team leagues or deeper where he might have been dropped following his recent absence.
Officially cleared
Smart (ankle) is active and will come off the bench Wednesday versus the Lakers, Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports. Smart's clearance comes as expected after it was reported earlier Wednesday that he was on track to play. It'll be a boost for the Grizzlies, who are tied for fourth in the Western Conference with seven wins -- the majority of which have come without Smart. Smart should slot back into a 20-to-25 minute role immediately, although he's averaging just 7.0 points on 23.5 percent shooting across his four healthy contests this year.
Set to play Wednesday
Smart (ankle) remains listed as questionable but is on track to play in Wednesday's game against the Lakers, Shams Charania reported on ESPN's "NBA Today" program. Expect the Grizzlies to officially clear Smart to play ahead of the 10 p.m. ET tipoff after the veteran guard had missed the last six games with a right ankle sprain. Before suffering the injury, Smart had started in each of the Grizzlies' first five games and averaged 5.6 points, 2.8 assists, 2.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.6 three-pointers and 0.6 blocks in 19.6 minutes. Given that he's making his return from an injury, Smart could be limited to around 20-to-25 minutes Wednesday, though head coach Taylor Jenkins hasn't specified that the 30-year-old will be subject to a restriction. Once he's further removed from the ankle sprain, Smart could make a push for a regular 30-minute role while the Grizzlies are without two of their other backcourt starters in Ja Morant (hip) and Desmond Bane (oblique).
