Viral Video Shows Tyreek Hill’s Rough Detainment Before Dolphins Season Opener

Chris Jones and Tyreek Hill trade social media messages after Chiefs extension.

Getty Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill sent a message to Chris Jones after news of his contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tyreek Hill was detained outside Hard Rock Stadium before the Miami Dolphins‘ season opener on September 8, with a now-viral video showing the rough incident as police surrounded the wide receiver and brought him to the ground.

ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques reported that the incident happened Sunday morning close to a block outside the stadium. Reporter Jeff Darlington shared further details, noting that Hill got into a verbal altercation with officers.

“I’m told by sources Tyreek Hill was cited for reckless driving as a result of his incident outside the stadium with police,” the ESPN reporter shared in a post on X. “After he was pulled over, he got into a verbal altercation with police. The officer chose to place Hill in handcuffs. He was cited and released after the situation was deescalated.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared video of Hill’s detainment outside the stadium, showing police grabbing the Dolphins wide receiver and bringing him to the ground. One officer appeared to push a knee into Hill’s lower back while twisting his arm backward to handcuff him.

Tyreek Hill Expected to Pay

Louis-Jacques reported that Hill is available to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the team’s season opener. He has been the team’s top wide receiver and one of the best in the NFL, making 119 receptions for a league-best 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, spoke out against the player’s arrest in an interview with ESPN. He called it a “heartbreaking situation” and said the detainment was “completely unnecessary.” Rosenhaus questioned the need to handcuff Hill during the detainment, saying it was a “mindboggling” decision.

“We will investigate,” Rosenhaus told ESPN. “We will look out for Tyreek.”

Hill has encountered legal trouble before, Rohan Nadkarni of NBC News noted.

“In 2014, Hill was arrested for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and pleaded guilty to domestic assault,” the report noted. “In 2019, he was investigated by Kansas City police for an alleged battery incident involving his then 3-year-old son, though no charges were filed and the NFL did not discipline Hill.”

Tyreek Hill Expects to Share Spotlight in 2024

Hill said prior to the start of the 2024 season that he expects teammate Jaylen Waddle to become the team’s top receiver, saying he has “taken his game to another level in the classroom” and is ready to put the hard work into action.

“He’s moved to the back of the classroom with me and River [Cracraft]. So he’s sitting beside us now,” Hill told Pro Football Network. “He’s asking more questions, which is great. He’s very eager to get better. And for me, I think, I believe that’s where it starts, if you want to be able to take your game to the next level as a not-ideal receiver size.”

Hill added that Waddle, who is entering his fourth NFL season, has been eager to learn from himself and other veterans.

“You’re fast, you’re twitchy, you gotta be able to do it in the classroom, and he’s done a great job, you know, taking advice from coach Wes [Welker] … and all of the older guys in our room,” Hill said. “I expect All-Pro, WR1, all that. Lead our team.”
