The last time UConn lost to a Connecticut team, Jim Calhoun was in his first season and Ronald Reagan was president.
The Huskies’ streak against in-state foes reached 68 games and stretched almost 28 years. But it came to an end Friday, when Yale’s Jack Montague hit a 3-pointer in the corner with less than 2 seconds left, giving Yale a 45-44 win and making the Bulldogs the first Connecticut team to beat UConn since Hartford did it in 1986. (Yale also beat the Huskies in ’86, but the Elis’ win came before the Hartford game.)
The loss is the third straight for defending champion UConn, which also lost on a last-second 3 to Texas at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday. Yale, on the other hand, is 8-2 and has won 8 out of 9 since a double overtime loss at Quinnipiac in its season opener.
As you’d expect, people throughout the Yale athletic department were pretty pumped up about the result — especially the public address announcer at Ingalls Rink, where the Yale hockey team beat RPI 5-2. (Hat tip to the New Haven Register’s Chip Malafronte for the video of the announcement.)
