This is a super slow week for DVD/Blu-Ray, with only 3 major releases, one of which is a quickie religious flick dealing with a kid with cancer, which is always good for a laugh. Who has the popcorn?
Date Night – This surprise hit starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey was released to theaters in April and went on to gross 98 million. Starring as a New Jersey married couple out for a night in Manhattan, they bluff their way into a hip restaurant and end up running for their lives. Featuring an all-star supporting cast (Mark Wahlberg, Mark Ruffalo, James Franco, Mila Kunis), and directed with confidence by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Big Fat Liar), this is your best bet of the week. Death at a Funeral – Oh, the outrage that was heaped upon this film when it was announced that Chris Rock was developing an urban remake of the English original only three years after it was released. Never mind the fact that the original brought in a total of $8.00 during it’s American run. It doesn’t matter if it was actually successful, it’s the principle of the thing! So to pacify the audience, Rock kept the original little person blackmailer from the first film, Peter Dinklage, hired James Marsden to play the token goofy white guy, gave Luke Wilson a job so he could make his mortgage payment this month, and wrote a part for Martin Lawrence that looks to be one of the best of his career. Also, Zoe Saldana makes an appearance as the hot girl. Watch the trailer.
Letters to God – What is this?! I had never heard of this movie before seeing the advertisement, and now after reading the description a few times, I am no closer to understanding what it is about. Help me out here. So this kid Tyler has cancer, and he’s just fighting it with a smile and a skip in his step. One of the ways he fights is by writing letters to God. Now, the drunken mailman, Brady, gets dragged into this boy’s life and starts falling for the kid’s mom and blah blah blah. Here’s my question…are the letters sealed? I mean, is this guy just ripping open these letters to God in a drunken stupor, like this is a hobby he does during his off time, just ripping into mail? Or is it something darker? Was it more of a drunken rage, like, “Oh yeah, Cancer Kid, where’s your God now?”, as he rips into the kid’s mail and starts reading it?
On second thought, maybe Letters to God is the way to go. If nothing else, it’s worth a buck at the Redbox to answer these burning questions.
