I walked into the screening for The Virginity Hit a couple of weeks ago not expecting much. The only thing I knew about going in was that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, the two men behind FunnyorDie.com, had produced this movie, and that it was written by the same guys, Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, that had written a movie that was about to come out later that week that had good buzz, The Last Exorcism. 20 minutes into the film, I realized that I was watching The Hangover of 2010.
The film follows a close knit group of friends who, with the help of Zack’s (Zack Pearlman) camera, record their progress in getting laid for the first time. For three of the friends, it doesn’t seem to be an issue. For Matt…well, actually, for Matt it doesn’t seem to be an issue, either. Matt’s girlfriend Nicole (Nicole Weaver) seems more than willing to give it up, but then feelings get hurt, and there’s miscommunication, etc. Soon there’s an ugly breakup, and we spend the remainder of the film with the friends on the search for tail.
If it sounds like I’m putting the movie down, I’m not. If you tried to describe most comedies by just their plots, most people wouldn’t understand what the big deal is. With The Virginity Hit, the big deal begins with Zack Pearlman. He is the comedy find of 2010. I believe that over the next few years, Pearlman will be competing for many of the jobs that Jonah Hill and Zach Galifianakis are automatically being given today. Also to be commended are the set designers. Honestly, more work went into selecting band posters for frat room walls than goes into decorating period pieces on a lot of big budget films. Also, the filming around New Orleans really captured the city, unlike the majority of productions that merely shoot there for the tax credits.
The comedy is what is going to bring the crowds out to the theaters though, and there is plenty to be found. Not to sound too lowbrow, but there is a diarrhea scene that rivals Dumb & Dumber for funniest ever filmed. Also, there is a traumatic shaving sequence that has to be seen to be believed. Sunny Leone also throws her name into the running for best acting performance ever given in a mainstream film by an adult film actress.
The Virginity Hit isn’t going to be playing on four screens in every multiplex in every city in America. Chances are if it is playing in your town, it will only be there for a short while. Grab a couple of buddies and go this weekend. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
