It’s certainly an ambitious-looking project, but can the guys who made the first Matrix film so awesome make another epic, special effects filled, era-defining thrill ride of a movie?
With megastar Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and talented director Tim Tykwer (Run Lola Run) helping the brothers out on both ends of the camera respectively, Cloud Atlas may be the most ambitious and epic film ever. Seriously. Did you watch the trailer? It looks amazing.
Almost too amazing.
Cloud Atlas is one of those books that’s so epic in scope no one thought it possible to adapt for the silver screen. Except the Wachowskis. They’re crazy.
We’ve seen before what happens when films try to encapsulate dense, literary fiction—Watchmen was even-tempered at best—but we’ve also seen the adaptation process churn out some goodies, as in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. From the looks of the trailer, this film is on track to blow our minds away like they have never been blown before.
From the futuristic, Asian ladies dressed like Latex Barbies, to Tom Hanks switching facial prosthetics every 10 seconds, the 6-minute trailer is packed with so much imagery and plot it’s hard to even conceive how this film will play out. It seems like it should be 20 hours long. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
In any case, if the narrative of the film nosedives halfway through, at least you’ll have the impressive visuals to grasp onto until the three-hour, $100 million blockbuster fades to black.
