‘Homeland’ Cleans Up at Emmys, Dethrones ‘Breaking Bad’ & ‘Mad Men’

Raking in awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Claire Danes), Outstanding Lead Actor (Damian Lewis), Best Drama and Best Writing in a Drama Series, Homeland beat out favorites such as Breaking Bad and Mad Men to take home its prizes after being awarded for nine different awards in all.

Lewis bested “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston, a three-time winner, and “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm, who was aiming to win his first individual Emmy after being nominated for the award five times.

Produced by Fox 21 and first debuting on October 2, 2011, on Showtime (with the first episode being released online), Homeland is a relatively new development on the TV scene and was recently renewed by Showtime for a second season to start again next week on September 30.

The series itself is based on Gideon Raff’s Israeli series Hatufim and has been under development since 2010. Following its initial pilot a first season was commissioned by Showtime on April 7, 2011, and its release was first announced on July 21, 2011 at San Diego’s Comic-Con.
