I didn’t grow-up during the golden age of television, so The Munsters has never been a property near and dear to my heart—although I did enjoy its syndication run during early Saturday mornings—but, when I heard that NBCUniversal was considering remaking the property into a new TV series, I thought, “Why mess with something so revered?”
The Munsters became immensely popular, despite its limited two-year run, and as far as I could tell, no one was clamoring for a re-introduction to the family from Mockingbird Lane.
But as we have grown accustomed to, Hollywood couldn’t give two damns what your clamoring for, it’s what the big-wigs at NBC want, and those old-timey farts want more Munsters, so that’s what we’re going to get.
But, judging by the looks of this first promo spot, the series actually looks like it might be fun. But don’t get your hopes up yet. The pilot episode is playing as a one-time offering, and if ratings and critical success follow, then, and only then, might we get a Munsters re-boot (appropriately named Mockingbird Lane).
I’m quite the fan of Eddie Izzard’s work. He was a lot of fun in the Ocean’s series, his stand-up is an intelligent mix of Carlin and Bill Maher but with more pizzazz, and his work on terminated FX dramedy, The Riches, was quite underrated. So, it’s safe to say, I’ll be tuning it to this special on October 26th, and hoping that it’ll give us the light-horrific humor it’s predecessor had in spades. If not, there’s always The Addams Family reboot waiting in the wings.
