This year’s MTV Video Music Awards will take place in Brooklyn’s new Barclays Center, according to Billboard.
This will mark the first major awards show televised from Brooklyn, and what better place to do it than at a stadium partly funded by borough native Jay-Z?
The event, which will take place on August 25, will be the 30th anniversary of the awards show. MTV has been dropping hints at the location using pictures from its social media accounts, and after a photo surfaced of the iconic Moonman at JFK Airport in New York City many had already guessed where the ceremony would take place. The VMAs, which have been held in several different cities over the years, have experienced a recent drop in ratings, and the choice of venue is hoped to boost that count.
Justin Bieber, Alicia Keys, Green Day, Rihanna, The Killers, Beyonce and more have upcoming shows at Barclays Center, and the Ringling Bros. Circus currently calls it home (as do the Brooklyn Nets). The venue is establishing itself as a destination for the most high-profile of events, and the VMAs will only further that image.
