Writer/Director For ‘The Avengers 2′ Hints at Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

The writer/director for Marvel Studios’ The Avengers 2 may have accidentally spilled the beans on who may appear in his film. During a video interview with Yahoo! Movies (which can be seen below), Joss Whedon dropped a puzzling clue as to who may make an appearance in the film:

“I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.”

The brother-sister act that Whedon may be referring to are Magneto’s own living seeds of mutant joy, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Seeing these two in the film together would be awesome to see, but a screen rights issue between Marvel Studios and Fox Studios may prevent them from showing up in The Avengers 2.

Kevin Feige, the President of Production at Marvel Studios, did an on-screen interview with Hey U Guys Co.UK to speak about the potential odds of fans seeing X-Men characters in The Avengers 2:

Hardcore Marvel Comics fans point to Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch as the combo team being hinted at for the film, but who knows at this point. IGN made a point to clear up the backstory and movie appearance possibilities for Magneto’s super kids:

Yes, they originated in the X-Men comics, which is generally 20th Century Fox’s purview, but it appears there’s more to it than that for the brother/sister duo, who went on to become Avengers in the comics. Instead, Feige reveals both 20th Century Fox and Marvel have legal access to Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in their respective films, which is unique to these characters. That’s right, Marvel could put them in an Avengers movie, while Fox could also separately put them in an X-Men movie if they so chose to. It’s hard not to ponder the oddness if both franchises included them, possibly with different actors – and set in different eras!

Superhero Hype released some news on the rumored casting plans for both characters:

Although Joss is still writing and probably not ready to send anything out to actors, for the two roles, they’re generally looking for actors in their 20s and we’ve heard word that the “prototype” for their Scarlet Witch is none other than Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. Except something to note is that they’re going “British” for the role rather than trying to have actors playing Eastern Europeans.

As it happens, Ronan just turned 19 last month and she will be turning 20 sometime during the time they would be filming the movie next year though she’s also already been playing more mature roles. If she is Marvel’s “prototype” for Wanda, why wouldn’t Marvel just outright make an offer to Ronan once they have a script done? Ronan has those mesmerizing eyes that would be perfect for the Scarlet Witch, too.

As far as Wanda’s brother Pietro–now we’re assuming they’re going to use the same first names from the comics even though they’re played as British—he’s only described as being “euro” and “edgy,” but there are plenty of British actors in their 20s who could fit that bill. Come on SHH readers, what actor could hold their own against Ms. Ronan? Please don’t mention either of the actors from The Host, though.

Let the nerd speculation continue! Are any other Avengers team members going to appear in the film (Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Dr. Strange etc.)?

The Avengers 2 is scheduled to land on the big screen on May 1, 2015.
