Governors Ball 2013 may be one of the biggest festivals in the New York City area this summer, and we’re gonna be there to cover the festival all three days. Here’s everything you need to know about Governors Ball 2013.
1. The Lineups Is Crazy
The lineup for the three-day festival is incredible and definitely one of the most packed lineups of any music festival this summer.
Key artists include Kendrick Lamar, The Lumineers, Nas, The XX, Pretty Lights, Grizzly Bear, The XX, Animal Collective, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Crystal Castles, Azealia Banks, Foals, Icona Pop, and more. You can see the full lineup list above.
2. They Have a Star-Studded Headlining Trio
There will be three main headlining acts at Governors Ball. Friday, Kings of Leon will the main attraction; winners of multiple Grammy awards, including Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance. The next two headliners don’t need any introduction. Saturday, the legendary Guns ‘N Roses will be finishing up the day and the final performance of Governors Ball 2013 will be Kanye West himself. Expect from new music from Kanye, who’s been releasing new music off of his upcoming album, Yeezus.
3. There will Be Four Stages
The set for the concert will be massive, and have four separate stages. The main stage will be Gov Ball NYC Stage. The others are “You’re Doing Great,” the “HondaSTAGE,” and the Skyy Vodka Tent. There are a few huge acts playing at the same time. For the final performances on Sunday, both Guns ‘N Roses are playing at the same time (9:30pm to 11:00pm). Similarly, on Sunday, from 6:45 to 8:00 pm, both the Grizzly Bear’s and The Lumineers’ are playing. Right after that, from 8:00 to 9:30 pm, The XX and Bloc Party will be playing concurrently. Finally, Kanye West closes the show…while The Avett Brothers play on a different stage at the same time.
4. Governors Ball Has Become Very Popular Over the Past Few Years
Governors Ball has become the premier New York City music event of the summer, especially with such legendary acts like Guns ‘N Roses and Kanye West. Clearly, attracting such massive talent for the event is amazing, but previous lineups were just as good. The first Governors Ball, 2 years ago, had Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Big Boi, Mac Miller, and Passion Pit. Last year, the lineup was just as good: Passion Pit, Duck Sauce, Chromeo, Kid Cudi, Major Lazer, Beck, Modest Mouse, Fiona Apple, and more all attended the second annual Governors Ball. But, the 2013 lineup definitely kicked it up a notch.
5. It’ll Take Place on Randall’s Island
The first two festivals took place on Governors Island, right next to Manhattan. But, with the festival now so big, with many people from across the world expected to attend, the event moved to the bigger Randall’s Island.
6. Here’s How You Get There
There are a few ways you can get to Gov Ball at Randall’s Island. According to the official site, you can get to the festival by car, walking/biking, a shuttle from Brooklyn, the Subway and MTA Bus line, and a ferry from Manhattan. The best — according to them — is coming from the Manhattan ferry, which will drop you off right in front of the show. However, for the three day pass, it’ll run you $50 dollars. It may be cheaper to take another form of transportation.
7. You Can Bring Food, But They’ll Have A Ton There
Governors Ball is really pushing the food and activities they’ll have at the festival. The festival will be catered by a lot of famous New York City restaurants, so visitors from other areas can still experience the best parts of NYC without leaving Governors Ball. You can read more about the food and activities available at Governors Ball here and here.
