1. Purdy Lost Her Spleen In Addition to Her Legs

Amy Purdy is a double leg amputee, who lost both of her legs below the knee because of Meningitis at the age of 19, as reported by Access Hollywood. Meningitis greatly affected her circulatory system and she also ended up having her spleen removed in addition to getting a kidney transplant from her father at 21-years-old.


2. Derek Hough Will Be Her Dancing Partner on DWTS This Season

It’s been announced that the talented Derek Hough will be Purdy’s partner on this season of Dancing With The Stars. But, the show has a new twist where partners may be switched, so there’s no telling if Hough will remain Purdy’s teacher for the season.


3. Duracell Has Teamed Up With Purdy for a New Ad


As one of the new ads for Duracell’s “Trust Your Power” series, the company focuses on Purdy and the story of losing her legs. According to The Wall Street Journal:

When disease took my legs, I eventually realized I didn’t need them to lead a full, empowering life,” says Purdy, who is the third athlete to appear in Duracell’s inspirational “Trust Your Power” video series, and the first double amputee to appear on the nation’s most popular televised dancing competition. “My goal has always been to live my life beyond limits by believing in seemingly impossible dreams and committing myself to making those dreams come true.

Duracell’s marketing director Jeff Jarret told the WSJ why Duracell chose Purdy:

Amy truly embodies the Trust Your Power spirit. It’s an honor to help tell her story — and inspire others to trust their power, no matter what comes their way.


4. She Was a Contestant on The Amazing Race


For season 21 of The Amazing Race, Purdy teamed up with Daniel Gale, but didn’t make it far in the competition. Check out this video clip of Purdy and her partner Daniel.


5. Purdy Is a Paralympic Star

Purdy got back to snowboarding just seven months after her legs were amputated. She then became a huge success in the sport, becoming a three-time World Cup Para-Snowboard winner. In addition to her action in the sport, she also believes in giving back through her non-profit organization Adaptive Action Sports.
