Charlie Sheen confirmed on Tuesday morning, during an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show, that he is HIV positive.
“I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV positive,” the actor said, adding that he first found out about his status “about four years ago.” Sheen told Lauer that he had initially paid people to keep his HIV status a secret. He estimated that he has paid upwards of $10 million to keep the news out of the headlines.
“I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, threatening the health of so many others that couldn’t be further from the truth,” Sheen said. “I trusted them and they were deep in my inner circle, and I thought they could be helpful. My trust turned to their treason.”
Sheen also admitted that he has had unprotected sex since his diagnosis, but that the two people involved were warned and that he has told all his sexual partners about his status. The actor, who has five children, was most recently connected with porn star Brett Rossi.
The pair were engaged but broke up in October 2014, a month before their wedding. Over the course of his career, Sheen has bragged that he’s had sex with over 5,00 women.
