J.J. Abrams, hot off his international Star Wars success, has been working on what is being debated as a possible sequel to the popular 2008 thriller Cloverfield, which he also produced. The flick was made by J.J.’s production company Bad Robot as well as Paramount Pictures.
The film stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. and was directed by Dan Trachtenberg. 10 Cloverfield Lane will be released in theaters on March 11, 2016, and early buzz is very positive.
The trailer slowly builds anticipation with three characters – two men and one woman – in some kind of underground bunker playing board games, doing puzzles, and making fun sandwiches. While we don’t know their back stories, it soon becomes obvious that they’re not three pals having your traditional game night. The song “I Think We’re Alone Now,” originally performed by Tommy James and The Shondells (using the Tiffany cover version from 1987 would make this a very different type of movie trailer) sets the creepy tone. The intensity ramps up with scenes of a character in possession of a gun, a fire breaking out, and violence erupting when the woman tries to escape the bunker. Towards the end of the teaser, the song changes tempo just enough to signal that whatever’s lurking outside those bunker doors (which is not revealed) is going to make the audience wish they really were alone now. John Goodman’s character intones the ominous warning, “Something’s coming.” We don’t know if it’s a monster or alien creature relating to the first Cloverfield film, but we can’t wait to find out.
The 10 Cloverfield Lane cast is already showing their excitement on the web.
