Tonight, Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky’s new documentary, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War, will air on PBS. The film recounts the experiences of Waitstill and Marsha Sharp, a couple who conducted perilous missions in Europe to save hundreds of political protestors and Jewish refugees as they tried to escape Nazi-occupied Europe. According to the documentary’s website, Unitarian minister Waitstill received a phone call from the Vice President of the American Unitarian Association, Everett Baker, asking if he’d help those trying to escape the Nazis. Though they faced imprisonment, possible torture, and death if caught, the Sharps committed nearly two years of their lives to helping refugees and Jews flee Nazi persecution.
