After two weeks of speculation, we finally found out what happened to Jack, Milo Ventimiglia‘s character on the hit freshman NBC series This Is Us. Creator Dan Fogelman kept Jack’s future a secret until the last moments of this week’s episode, “The Game Plan.”

Sadly, it turned out that Jack has died, and Kate (Chrissy Metz) has his urn on her mantle. However, the Pearson children still feel as though their father is still a major influence in their lives. Kate revealed Jack’s fate in a conversation with her boyfriend, Toby (Chris Sullivan).

The news also makes Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) search for his biological father William (Ron Dephas Jones) more poignant and we now know why Rebecca (Mandy Moore) feared the possible impact if it turned out that William was lying about his illness.

However, the mystery of when Jack died remains unsolved. Kate and Jack got back together to watch the Steelers win the Super Bowl in 2006, but it’s not clear if Jack was alive to see the Steelers win in 2009.

Despite being a new show, This Is Us has already built a sizeable following and many used the hashtag #WhereIsJack as the episode aired. Here are some of the best comments from fans during and after the episode.
