After taking a surprising supporting role in the Invasion! crossover with the other heroes of The CW’s Arrowverse, we’ll have to wait even longer for Kara (Melissa Benoist) to return to the spotlight. The next new episode of Supergirl doesn’t air until January.
Season two’s ninth episode, “Supergirl Lives,” doesn’t air until Monday, January 23, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET. It will be directed by Kevin Smith, the same filmmaker behind Clerks. He also directed two episodes of The Flash this fall.
On December 5, The CW will air “The Adventures of Supergirl” and “The Last Children of Kyrpton,” which guest-starred Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
The title “Supergirl Lives” is a nod to Superman Lives, the ill-fated Superman movie Smith was attached to that starred Nicholas Cage and was supposed to be directed by Tim Burton.
The previous episode of Supergirl, “Medusa,” was billed as the first part of the major crossover event with The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. However, it was mostly a Supergirl episode, and ended with Cadmus seemingly dismantled after Lillian Luthor (Brenda Strong) was arrested. However, Cyborg Superman (David Harewood) is on the loose and we saw some mysterious aliens searching for Mon-El’s (Chris Wood) ship.
Although Supergirl was mostly in the background during most of Invasion!, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teased to Entertainment Weekly that the Dominators will return. The Dominators were the aliens who threatened the Flash and Green Arrow’s earth in the crossover.
“I will say this is not the last you’ve seen on the Dominators,” Kreisberg said. “The Dominators will return on Supergirl later this season.”
The crossover ended with Supergirl getting a special tool built by Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) that opens a multi-dimensional door so Kara can travel between Earth-1 and her Earth-38. So, maybe she can call on her friends to help her when the Dominators arrive.
