One of the biggest surprises from the Golden Globes nominations on December 12 was that NBC‘s smash hit freshman series This Is Us walked away with three major nominations. Unfortunately, the two actors up for an award didn’t win. The show also lost Best Drama Series to Netflix’s The Crown.
Thanks to the show’s ensemble nature, none of its stars would stand out in the lead category. Therefore, both Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz were nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. The competition in that category is tough, as the other nominees were The Night Manager‘s Olivia Colman, Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey and Westworld‘s Thandie Newton. Colman won the award.
Amazingly, none of these actresses were in last year’s field. Maura Tierney won the award last year for The Affair.
As Variety notes, every member of the cast was submitted in the supporting categories. Although none of the male stars earned nominations for the show, Sterling K. Brown was nominated for his role in The People v. O.J. Simpson, which has already earned him an Emmy win.
This Is Us was the only network television drama up for Best Television Series-Drama. The other nominees are Game of Thrones (HBO), The Crown (Netflix) – which won, Stranger Things (Netflix) and Westworld (HBO). Surprisingly, last year’s winner, Mr. Robot (USA Network) was not nominated. This is the first time in a decade that NBC has a show in the category.
The series tells the story of the Pearson family, in the past and present. The cast also includes Justin Hartley, Ron Cephas Jones, Milo Ventimiglia and Susan Kelechi Watson. It was created by Dan Fogelman.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association votes on the Golden Globes, so Metz and Moore directed their thanks to the organization after hearing about their nominations.
Moore shared a photo with Metz from the Critics’ Choice Awards. Although the show was nominated for Best Drama Series at that ceremony, it lost to Game of Thrones.
This Is Us is currently on its winter break and won’t be back until January 10, 2017. To catch up, click here to read the latest recap. As for the 74th Annual Golden Globes Awards, it is held on January 8, 2017 and airs on NBC. Hopefully This Is Us will pick up a win for the network to boast about the day after.
