Tonight, Ryan Gosling won a Golden Globe award for his role in the movie La La Land tonight and he first joked about getting mistaken for Ryan Reynolds. When Goldie Hawn announced the win, it almost seemed like she was going to accidentally say the wrong name.
Then, Gosling joked about cutting up the award and splitting it with his cast-mates.
Soon, Gosling’s speech took a serious turn when he thanked his “lady” Eva Mendes for caring for their kids so that he was able to prepare for this role. At the same time, Gosling said Mendes was also at the side of her brother, who was dying of cancer.
At the end of his acceptance speech, Gosling revealed that Mendes’ brother did indeed pass away as he made a dedication to him. In April 2016, Mendes’ brother Carlos, 53, lost his battle with cancer and Mendes posted a touching tribute to him on Instagram, writing:
With absolute pain and sadness in my heart this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through in my life and as I’m writing this I’m still in disbelief. My brother has passed away peacefully this morning. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for those who have prayed and have kept my brother in your thoughts and who wished him to get better. He fought with all his might and power and gave cancer one hell of a fight. He leaves behind behind a 13 year old and a 5 year old. I love you my brother may god bless you and I’ll see you once again.
