Tonight was the season 3 finale of Alone, with three contestants left in the mix. For weeks, participants have individually tried to survive in the wilderness of Patagonia, Argentina. Ten contestants started out on a journey to win $500,000 and now, the final days have arrived. Whoever was the one to hold out the longest was the winner. Some contestants had been made to leave for medical reasons while others were “mentally done” and tapped out. Get the details on this season’s winner in our recap below.
The three remaining cast members at the beginning of the finale were Carleigh Fairchild, Zachary Fowler and Megan Hanacek. At this point, all three were focused on winning the money, trying to avoid starvation, and missing their loved ones. With random medical check-ups throughout their journey, some of the contestants fear being pulled out of the competition due to significant weight-loss.
Day 78 hits and another cast member is leaving the competition. Megan decides to tap out for several reasons. She has cracked a tooth in the back of her mouth that’s gotten increasingly painful. In addition, she misses her family and feels a bit of guilt as a mother.
This leaves Fowler and Fairchild still remaining. As the contestants were still dealing with day-to-day living, the episodes showed footage of each of them from throughout the season.
Since first arriving in Patagonia, Fairchild has lost 30% of her weight. Fowler lost nearly 33% of his body weight during his time on the show. As medical staff examines both participants, they each worry they’ll be pulled from the competition. Participants are usually pulled at about 17 BMI (Body Mass Index) because this can lead to organ failure and even death.
Fairchild was pulled because she was in medical danger with a BMI of 16.8. She was risking permanent damage to her body at this point. Fairchild understood that she had to leave, but she was disappointed and devastated.
In the end, Fowler held out the longest with 87 days. When a boat shows up for a medical check-up, Fowler worries about being pulled from the show, having no idea what’s gone on with other competitors. As Fowler talks to his camera about how much he misses his family, his wife sneaks up to surprise him and tell him that he’s won.
