The season four finale for NBC’s Chicago PD aired on May 18, closing out another year of high drama for the Intelligence Unit. So you might be wondering if the show has been renewed for season five. Thankfully, the show has been renewed and will return in Fall 2017. However, star Sophia Bush is not.
In the finale, Bush’s Lindsay character was stripped of her badge. At first, Bush wouldn’t confirm or deny that she’s leaving for good.
“Every once in a while you get to see underneath with Lindsay, and there’s been sort of drama and toss-ups,” Bush told Hollywood Life. “Sometimes we get scripts and we’re like, ‘Why is this happening?’ But I think it’s all been to sort of serve the last two episodes, which I’m excited about.”
On May 25, Deadline confirmed that Bush will not be returning at all for season five. She has decided to leave on her own, but it is possible that she could come back for guest appearances.
NBC decided to renew the show back on May 10, along with Chicago Fire and Chicago Med. Every show is part of the shared Chicago universe, with frequent crossover specials airing each season. Chicago Justice been cancelled after just one season became the first series in the universe to fail, as it’s .
Renewing PD was an easy decision, as the show has been an anchor on Wednesday nights, alongside Law & Order: SVU and Blindspot. Those two shows were also renewed. Season four of PD averaged 6.538 million viewers and a 1.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That is a 4.9 percent decrease in viewers and a 11.23 percent decrease in the ratings compared to season three.
The season four finale ended the season in epic fashion, as Bunny (Markie Post), the mother of Linday (Sophia Bush), was accused or murder when her boyfriend is shot. A group of high school students then overdosed on drugs, which are connected to Bunny. The review board also investigated Lindsay for her recent actions.
There could also be a shocking end to the season. Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) might ask Lindsay to marry him. “Halstead is thinking about asking her to marry him,” Soffer told Us Weekly. Soffer also said there’s multiple cliffhangers that will have to be solved in season five.
“There’s a couple huge cliffhangers,” Soffer told Us Weekly. “Lindsay’s character gets into a lot of trouble. She goes too far in the interrogation room. We have to wait and see if she still has her job [and] if she can stay in the unit. Boyd is going to try and take care of business and come to the rescue.”
Also, when PD comes back, it will have a new showrunner. SVU‘s Rich Eid is taking over for creator Matt Olmstead to lead the show. As for SVU, it still doesn’t have a replacement for Eid.
“It’s going to be a very different season,” Jason Beghe, who plays Hank Voight, told Us Weekly. “We have a new showrunner, new writers, they are still hiring them. Then we will start creating ideas. It’s too early to tell [what will happen next].”
The cast for PD includes Sophia Bush, Jason Beghe, Jesse Lee Soffer, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, Elias Koteas and LaRoyce Hawkins.
