A lot of rumors have been circulating about the Rick and Morty Season 3 premiere, ranging from a rumor that it was canceled (it’s not) and a new rumor that it might start during the live stream event on June 29. But another rumor has been circulating that Season 3 is returning on July 26. Is there any truth to this? (Note: To learn what’s happening during the live stream event, see our story here.)
No, Adult Swim has NOT made an announcement that Rick and Morty is premiering on July 26. This is just an unsubstantiated rumor based on a Season 2 promotion.
But during the Rick and Morty live stream event, they announced that the new episode will be premiering on July 30.
So how did this rumor even get started?
It appears that the rumor originated from a promo video advertising the Season 2 premiere, not the Season 3 premiere. The rumor gained traction when an unofficial Facebook fan page for Rick and Morty, called “Rick and Morty Season 9 More Seasons,” shared it. This page posted the video with a message: “WE GOT A RELEASE DATE.” Here’s the video they shared:
At the end of the video, a screenshot says the show is airing Sunday, July 26 at 11:30 p.m. This screenshot is not about Season 3. This was about the premiere date of Season 2.
Rick and Morty Season 2 premiered on Sunday, July 26. This video is not about Season 3 because this year, July 26 falls on a Wednesday, not a Sunday.
Unfortunately, many fans believed the video and began passing around the misinformation. Just from this one fan page alone, it has 46,000 shares and more than 2 million comments so far from excited fans who are bound to be disappointed when the information proves to be wrong. (But we can only hope that the show will have premiered long before July 26 rolls around anyway!)
The rumor may have started because you can find the video here on AdultSwim.com, and right below it is a post about the Rick and Morty marathon and live stream event happening on June 29, tonight. It’s easy to understand how some people would be confused. But this is just one of many videos from previous seasons, running above the announcement, not a video made to go with the announcement. If you let the video keep running, it immediately moves on to Mortynight Run, a clip from a previous season and unrelated to the live stream announcement.
If you look, you can see that this video was shared many times in relation to the Season 2 premiere, all over the Internet. Here’s a Reddit discussion about this exact video, with the premiere date at the end, from over a year ago.
So no, the rumor isn’t true. Now we know that the real premiere date is July 30.
