Actress Meghan Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry was officially announced this morning via The Clarence House on Twitter. The Clarence House released an official letter on the news, giving information on the impending wedding, which is set to take place in Spring 2018. Kensington Palace has been tweeting several messages about the engagement as well, spreading the news with the following announcement, “The Prince of Wales has announced the engagement of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle.” Prior to meeting Prince Harry, in 2011, Markle married her ex-husband Trevor Engelson. In the past, it would have been unacceptable for Prince Harry to marry a woman who had been married and divorced. The Sun reported that The Queen and the Royals’ have softened when it comes to divorcees marrying into the family. King Edward VIII had to advocate the throne to marry his divorcee wife Wallis Simpson. Prince Charles, however, was allowed to marry divorcee Camilla Parker Bowles in their 2005 wedding. Both Prince Andrew and Prince Charles are also divorced. On Twitter, it was announced that The Queen is happy about Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry. The official statement reads, “The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness.”


2. Engelson Also Works In the Entertainment Industry

While Markle is an actress known for the show Suits, her ex-husband Engelson was also in the entertainment industry. Engelson is a movie producer, who produced the movie Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson, and Robin Williams’ License to Wed, among other films. He first started his career as a production assistant. In the end, a friend told The Daily Mail that it was Markle and Engelson’s careers that got in the way of their relationship. The insider explained that, “It put a strain on the relationship. Trevor was in LA making movies, Meghan was in another country five hours’ flight away and it simply took its toll.” Markle was working in Toronto, Canada at the time. In his career, Engelson has also worked as an actor and talent manager, according to Metro.

According to The Mirror, Engelson and Markle met in 2004 and date for six years before they became engaged in 2010. They then married in 2011, only to divorce in 2013, citing “irreconcilable differences”. In the documentary Prince Harry and Meghan: Truly, Madly, Deeply, a friend of Markle’s, Abby Wathen, talked about the effects Markle’s divorce had on her. She revealed, “Meghan and I bonded because I was married and she was getting married. I was invited to her wedding but I couldn’t go. Then we both went through divorce, so we bonded on that too. I was destroyed, but she was empowered. She took her power back. It wasn’t the right relationship for her, so she moved on.”


4. Markle’s Wedding to Engelson Was a Destination Event

Meghan Markle and Trevor Engelson got married on September 10, 2011, in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Their wedding had about 100 family members and friends in attendance and was a four-day event, according to The Sun. According to an insider, the couple was having issues right after the wedding. The insider stated that, “Meghan landed her role in Suits just a few months before they married. And despite being together for six years before getting hitched, things started to fall apart not long after the wedding … They really battled with long distances.” Express reports that Engelson and Markle married five months before Prince Harry’s brother William and Kate Middleton tied the knot.
