‘DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition’ Review: Improved Frames Leads to Improved Action

Game: DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition
Consoles: Xbox One, PS4 (Reviewed)
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Ninja Theory

There was a massive uproar among the diehard fanbase of Capcom’s Devil May Cry series once developer Ninja Theory’s was revealed. Some gamers regarded the game’s visual overhaul of Dante and Vergil as a huge mistake, while others got past the look of beloved characters and enjoyed its fast paced gameplay. In this reviewers honest opinion, the original release of DmC Devil May Cry was an entertaining ride that was packed with sweet art design and trippy level design. Capcom is giving this reimagining of the Devil May Cry series a new lease on life on the Xbox One and PS4 with this Definitive Edition.

At its core, this re-release of the 2013 original acts as a much prettier version of an already solid hack, slash and shoot ’em up. The additional content that makes this release definitive are great gifts for returning players. The new costumes given to Dante and Vergil are cool nods to their more traditional appearances from past games in the series. It’s pretty cool to watch Devil May Cry 3 Dante and Vergil are available for play in Ninja Theory’s interpretation of a demon filled world. One of the biggest features this re-release sports is the visual upgrades. The 1080p and 60FPS visual output does an awesome job of giving the intense action an even smoother look and feel. For fans of the original release who want to see this game operate at its highest graphical settings, this Definitive Edition is the way to go.

On the gameplay front, the main campaign largely remains the same. The best aspects of Dante’s journey (the fast paced battles and platforming segments) and its less favorable features (the attempts at humor that’s usually more miss than hit) are still evident here. But the most hardcore players of the initial release will notice the re-tuned and re-balanced elements apparent during battle. The manual lock-on mechanic is a welcome addition to the game, which helps players of all styles have an easier time fending off baddies. The wealth of difficulty modes, a faster gameplay option that comes with Turbo Mode and the access to Vergil’s playable DLC are just more of the added items that makes a 2nd purchase of this game a valid option.

Bottom Line

DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition arrives with a nice selection of added items and mechanics that will make its most ardent fans pleased. The visual upgrades, new character costumes, hardcore difficulty modes and more should make it easy for most fans to decide to return to this enjoyable action game. The core storyline, which still includes the crude humor and somewhat forced badass attitude of Dante, is still oft-putting for non-fans. But fans who wish to to play this hack and slasher on their current-gen consoles, this Definitive Edition is the smart move to make.

Score: 8.75/10

Pros:

  • 1080p/60 FPS visual upgrade looks awesome in motion
  • Brand new difficulty modes and Turbo Mode provides a new challenge for returning players
  • Throwback costumes and Vergil’s DLC additions are also a nice touch

Cons:

  • No fresh, original content available to those who tore through the original release
