During this year’s Gamescom, developer Blizzard unveiled another new animated short for their hit game Overwatch. Since the series debuted back at Blizzcon 2014, the game has received a number of animated shorts that help flesh out both the world and characters. This is especially needed since Overwatch lacks any kind of story mode or campaign, making most of the lore told through small dialogue exchanges and outside sources. Up until now, we have had four animated shorts with characters such as Widowmaker, Winston, Genji, Hanzo, and Soldier 76 all taking a starring role.
We can now add the robotic killing machine Bastion to that list, as the latest animated short showed us the defining moment in his life. In the Overwatch lore, Bastion is an Omnic soldier that was involved during the massive war between humans and robots. However, after a massive battle, Bastion ends up stranded in the woods and begins to question his existence as a machine designed to kill. This is what “The Last Bastion” focuses on and also explains the origin of how Bastion met his bird companion Ganymede.
Also, we get a brief glimpse of what a war with the Omnics actually looked like, as the flashback sequence showcases Reinhardt and his mentor Balderich von Alder. Given we’ve never seen what the Omnic Crisis actually looked like, it’s nice to see the horrific even that has been eluded to throughout the entire game. Balderich’s corpse can actually be found in the new Overwatch map that was unveiled a few days prior and will also be available as an alternate outfit for the hammer-wielding powerhouse Reinhardt. There is no doubt that the internet is already searching for clues in this video relating to the next suspected hidden character Sombra, but so far nothing concrete has been discovered.
