‘Pokemon Go’: Niantic Provides Update on Apple Watch App

Months after the Pokemon Go Apple Watch app was originally announced, Niantic has provided an update on its status, confirming that the project has not been canceled.

On Twitter today, Niantic said via the official Pokemon Go account that the Apple Watch app is coming soon. No other details were provided.

Although this tweet offers no new information at all and does not specify a release date, it’s at least an indication that the app is still on the way. That’s good news considering it was recently reported by 9 to 5 Mac that the app had been canceled entirely. That report claimed that Niantic was working on an “unfinished port” of Pokemon Go for Apple Watch but that this idea had been scrapped. Thankfully, this is apparently not the case.

So will the Apple Watch version of the game be released anytime soon? It’s hard to say, and it’s likely that Niantic issued this statement primarily in reaction to the 9 to 5 Mac report rather than because they are actually close to a launch day. Then again, the company did say at the beginning of December that they had a lot of cool things in store for fans this month. Could this app be one of them?

Pokemon Go for Apple Watch was originally announced at an Apple event back in September. Though not a whole lot of information was provided at the time, using this app, players will be able to see when a Pokemon or a PokeStop is in their area without having to pull out their phone. Something similar is possible with Pokemon Go Plusa $35 wearable accessory, but because that doesn’t have an actual screen, all you get is a vibration and a light turning on when a Pokemon is nearby.

The Apple Watch app will also measure your distance traveled and count that towards egg progress, which should prove to be incredibly convenient for players who want to hatch more Pokemon but don’t want to constantly have their iPhone running Pokemon Go.

Stay tuned for additional updates about the status of the Pokemon Go Apple Watch app.
