With Easter just over a week away, Pokemon Go players are hopeful that another special event will take place in the game. So is an Easter event likely? And when might it launch?
So far, Niantic has not said anything about an Easter event. But considering the fact that there have been special events for most major holidays over the past few months, and given that it’s a little too perfect that Pokemon Go relies heavily on eggs just like Easter does, it’s a fair assumption that an Easter event is in the works.
Since October, the only major holiday that did not receive any sort of special event in Pokemon Go was St. Patrick’s Day. Other than that, there were special events for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, and even World Water Day.
Based on recent history, if there is going to be an Easter event, we should expect an announcement pretty soon. The Halloween event, for example, was was announced on October 24th, one week before Halloween, and it began on October 26th. If Niantic were to follow that road map, the Easter event will be announced on Sunday, April 9th.
However, the time frame of their announcements has varied. The Thanksgiving event was announced November 21st, three days before Thanksgiving, and it began on November 23rd. The Christmas event was announced on December 23rd, two days before Christmas, and it began on Christmas itself.
And the Valentine’s Day event was announced on February 8th, six days before Valentine’s Day. It began on February 8th, the same day of the announcement.
So what might an Easter event entail? Some have speculated that Niantic might increase the drop rate of lucky eggs, while others have suggested that the distance required to hatch an egg might be cut in half. Sometimes Niantic likes to have a store sale take place in conjunction with a special event, so it’s also possible that the company will reduce the price of lucky eggs.
In addition, Niantic is a fan of increasing the spawn rate of Pokemon that are related to the holiday in question, as when pink Pokemon spawned more frequently during Valentine’s Day. If Niantic were to do something similar here, they could increase the drop rate of Chansey, Blissey, and Eggsecute.
Some players have speculated that there won’t be an Easter event because this is specifically a Christian holiday. But Niantic has already celebrated a Christian holiday when they had a Christmas event. Granted, the game developer never actually did use the word “Christmas” in its announcement, simply saying it was a holiday celebration, but they did make use of Christmas imagery by having special Santa-hat-wearing Pikachu spawn in the game.
