Splatoon 2 is Nintendo’s newest first party game, so there is a lot riding on this title succeeding both critically and financially. The follow up to the wildly praised Splatoon on the Wii U, this sequel aims to deliver and bigger and more robust experience. Naturally, players will want to jump right into the action as soon as possible and cover their friends in ink. Thankfully, users will not have to wait much longer as Splatoon 2 officially releases tomorrow, July 21 for the Nintendo Switch.
Where things get a bit complicated is if you want to play Splatoon 2 digitally as Nintendo currently doesn’t allow for players to purchase or pre-load their games like Sony and Microsoft. If you’re planning on buying this game digitally then you will have to purchase and download the game that night. However, Nintendo has been rather silent on when exactly this release time would be. Neither their official website or the Nintendo Switch storefront was there any information on the time this title unlocked.
We reached out to our Nintendo PR contact who then informed us that Splatoon 2 would unlock at 9:00 p.m. PT /12:00 a.m. ET. So if you’re looking to jump right into the fray, you will probably only have to wait a little more after the unlock time to fully download the game. Since the file is only a little over 3 GB, it shouldn’t take much time to have the game installed on your system.
For those looking to play online with friends, Nintendo also released their new voice chat systems application on the Android and iOS store. This is currently the only way to talk with your friends, so make sure you have a headset that can plug into your phone. However, voice chat is not required to play online so you can jump straight into the action as soon as the game is installed.
