A new update to the Sony Rewards program allows players to earn money towards buying new games depending on how good they were at old games.
If you’re a member of the Sony Rewards program, you will be able to accumulate points that will be converted into PSN currency that will allow you to purchase some new games. The system has been updated so it will now allow you to convert trophies you’ve earned in various games towards currency as well.
Before you get all excited and sign up, it’s worth noting that trophies earned before signing up will not count towards the program. Only fresh trophies will be able to be converted into points and this offer applies only to those in the United States for now.
You won’t start making money overnight as the program requires a hefty amount of trophies to even get started. 100 silver trophies will net you 100 points, 25 gold trophies get you 250 points and 10 platinum trophies give you 1000 points. Bronze trophies won’t get you anything and 1000 points gets you $10 of PSN credit.
If you’re still interested in the program, and you probably should be since it’s free, just head here to get signed up. Maybe you have a plethora of easy games to platinum on hand that will let you earn some quick cash.
All of this is good news for PlayStation fans but what about Xbox fans? Microsoft championed the achievement/trophy system as we know it today with the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005. Sony and PS3 did not include a trophy system at launch but instead added it in a few years later.
When the news first began to spread about the update to the Sony Rewards program, someone pointed it out to Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, on Twitter and he mentioned how it sounds like a cool feature. You can continue reading the rest of the replies to his answer if you like but be warned it gets pretty toxic the further down you go.
If Microsoft does end up adding this feature in, it would be sad to see players not be able to use the gamerscore they have accumulated over 12 years. For many, achievements have become an addiction of sorts and forces those who want the 1000 gamerscore to do things they wouldn’t normally do. It does help lengthen games in some cases but many times it’s just to make you grind for more points.
Whatever side of the line in the sand you stand on regarding achievements and trophies, this feature will be sure to make gamers happy. It’s no longer easy to argue that achievements and trophies are worthless as they will now let you earn currency towards games. They were always harmless to begin with and players didn’t have to sweat over them but now they have some important uses that will make them harder to ignore.
With all that said, there’s no timetable as to when Xbox would begin to implement a feature like this or even if they will. All we know right now is it’s being looked into and that’s okay for now.
