The UFC’s first foray into Boston certainly won’t be lacking on Massachusetts natives.
Joe Lauzon is the latest Boston local to join the UFC 118 card, as he’ll face top British lightweight prospect Terry Etim on the Aug. 28 event.
Fighters Only magazine was the first to report the possibility of the matchup. Heavy.com has confirmed that both Etim and Lauzon have verbally agreed to the bout. Bout agreements are expected to be distributed shortly.
UFC 118 hasn’t been officially announced by the UFC, but it’s expected to take place Aug. 28 at the TD Garden. The event will be headlined by a lightweight title rematch between current champion Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn, who Edgar beat at last month’s UFC 112 event in Abu Dhabi.
Lauzon last appeared at UFC 108, losing an underwhelming decision to Sam Stout. It was Lauzon’s first appearance since a knee injury kept him out of action for eleven months. He’d previously defeated Jeremy Stephens and Kyle Bradley.
Etim, considered by many to be the best overall British fighter in the organization, is also rebounding from a loss. After putting together an impressive four-fight win streak (including a victory over Sam Stout), Etim was submitted by Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 112.
