World Extreme Cagefighting will make its breakthrough debut in Canada later this summer with “WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus” and the promotion is prepared having finalized the official fight card earlier today with a pair of additions.
In a bantamweight match up, Will Campuzano is set to face off against Rafael Rebello in a battle of rising 135-pounders. Campuzano rebounded from his first career loss, a submission to Damacio Page at WEC 43, with a unanimous decision victory over Coty Wheeler at WEC 46. The victory pushed his professional record to an impressive 7-1.
Rebello, who has been a rather inconsistent competitor, also gained a victory in his last fight after submitting Kyle Dietz at WEC 41. The fight, which was in June of 2009, was the last time Rebello fought. Since that date, his opponent has fought twice, leaving Rebello with the distinct possibility of running into trouble with ring rust against a much more active opponent. Rebello is sitting on a 6-3 record and is 1-1 in the WEC.
In the other announced match, featherweights Bendy Casimir and Erik Koch will look to break through in the WEC’s competitive 145-pound division. Casimir, a 27-fight veteran of the sport, debuted in the promotion against Ricardo Lamas at WEC 47 with a knockout loss that was as disappointing as it was devastating. Regardless of the loss, Casimir has won 15 of his last 17 fights and will look to gain his first victory with the promotion over Koch.
Koch entered the WEC with an undefeated record, but, after winning his first fight with the promotion, dropped a decision to Chad Mendes at WEC 47. He currently holds a professional record of 9-1, as he looks for redemption after tasting defeat for the first time in his young professional career.
Both fights are slated for the preliminary card of WEC 49, which is set for the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on June 20. The main card of the event will air live on Versus and features a lightweight contender match up between former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner and fast-rising Kamal Shalorus in a fight that could determine the next 155-pound top contender. A featherweight match up between Josh Grispi and LC Davis is another match up of contenders that will be featured on the main card.
