With the merger of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting, the lightweight divisions collide, and a title unification bout will occur at some point in 2011.
Dana White revealed the news today on the media conference call, stating that the winner between WEC champion Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis will take on the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard.
The news of the UFC-WEC merger was sent out today. While the WEC sends its featherweight and bantamweight divisions into the UFC, the lightweight divisions are to be combined, resulting in the title unification.
Edgar and Maynard, two lightweights who have met before, are set to rematch at UFC 125 this January, with champion Edgar looking to avenge his lone loss to the undefeated Maynard. Meanwhile, Henderson and Pettis are set to meet at the final World Extreme Cagefighting event this December.
