Outspoken lightweight released after just one fight
Antonio McKee‘s long-awaited trip into the UFC‘s lightweight division lasted just one fight.
McKee, a brash and outspoken lightweight who compared himself to Georges St. Pierre prior to entering the UFC, was released from his contract with the company on Tuesday. Sources close to the company confirmed the news with Heavy.com on Wednesday night. FiveOuncesofPain.com was the first to report the news.
McKee turned up the trash talk prior to his fight with Jacob Volkmann at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day.
“I feel sad for the opponents, you know? I hope maybe they’ll just let me submit them, because I really don’t want to hurt them,” McKee said. “What are they going to do, stop me from taking them down? Stop me from ground-and-pounding them? Stop me from hitting them with the elbows? Come on, you serious?”
Volkmann defeated Mckee by split decision in the worst fight of the night. Contracts will be tough to hold onto in the UFC’s new lightweight division, and McKee was just the first of many casualties.
