Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza plans to utilize jiu-jitsu against Robbie Lawler.
Strikeforce middleweight titleholder Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza puts his belt on the line Jan. 29 against former champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler, and plans to utilize his jiu-jitsu to get the win.
“The plan is to bring jiu-jitsu to the fight. I don’t know how or when I’m going to bring that to the game, but I’m well prepared,” said the champion. “When I see the right time, bring jiu-jitsu to the table and use it.”
Lawler is a knockout artist with good boxing and a solid wrestling base, but the primarily jiu-jitsu specialist Souza has worked hard to evolve his game into a well-rounded mixed martial artist.
“I have a great team behind me. We take this very seriously, the whole camp. I’ve been training a lot on my cardio, my explosiveness. I’ve been training a lot of boxing, been training a lot on how to walk around the cage, ring,” said Souza.
“I know he’s a good boxer, but I’m prepared to go there and fight, so pretty much I’m doing everything necessary to go there and hopefully end the fight before the fifth round.”
“I’ve been training everything, but I’ve been training a lot of boxing. I do a lot of takedowns,” added Souza. “I don’t call my takedowns wrestling takedowns. There’re pretty much a ‘Jacare’ takedown because I’ve got my own twist on it, so I’ve pretty much been training everything, boxing, wrestling and jiu-jitsu to go there and provide a good fight.”
The Brazilian considers Lawler to be among the best opponent’s he’s faced and expects a “battle.”
“I’ve fought a bunch of tough guys and I’d put Robbie Lawler right there in the mix,” he said. “He’s a very tough guy. I know it’s going to be a good fight, a good battle.”
