Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will meet in June with a title shot on the line
“The Ultimate Fighter 13” coaches were revealed after months of speculation on Tuesday. Former UFC heavyweight titleholder Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos were chosen to lead opposite teams comprised of welterweights on the upcoming season of the popular Spike TV reality series.
Dos Santos was next in line to face champion Cain Velasquez but a shoulder injury and corrective surgery has sidelined Velasquez for several months.
The UFC’s heavyweight division has seen several interim titleholders crowned over the years for various reasons from positive steroid tests, motorcycle accidents to contract disputes.
Speculation of whether Lesnar vs. Dos Santos would be for an interim title was quickly squashed by UFC president Dana White.
“No, there’s no Interim title,” White told the media after announcing the coaches and the match up. “Obviously these two are going to coach and then they’ll fight and the winner of that fight will fight Cain Velasquez when he’s healthy.”
Filming of “The Ultimate Fighter 13” begins Jan. 24 or 25 and debuts on Spike TV on March 30. The finale is set to take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on June 4.
Lesnar vs. Dos Santos will headline a pay-per-view in June.
“It’ll be the June pay-per-view, right after the finale,” said White. “I don’t know where and I don’t know the date yet, but it will be in June. It will definitely 100-percent be in June.”
Although not officially announced, UFC 131 is expected to take place on June 11 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto and is the likely date and venue of Lesnar vs. Dos Santos.
