Heavy.com confirmed the fight booking with sources close to the event on Monday night. MMAJunkie.com first reported the story.
UFC 128 takes place March 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The main event features the long-awaited return of light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua as he faces off against Rashad Evans.
The news comes one day after Sonnen pleaded guilty to federal charges of money laundering. It’s a charge that carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years and a $500,000 fine, but Sonnen has reached a plea agreement that will see him pay a $10,000 fine and serve 2 years probation. Sonnen was also required to give up his realtor’s license.
Akiyama was last seen in the Octagon in a loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 120.
