Dominick Cruz to undergo hand surgery
UFC bantamweight titleholder Dominick Cruz will undergo surgery this week in Chicago on his left hand that could sideline the champion for up to six months.
ESPN.com first reported the story on Monday.
The hand injury to his index finger has plagued the top ranked bantamweight for his last two fights. Heading into his WEC 53 title bout with Scott Jorgensen, Cruz said he had put off the surgery long enough and would have the operation following the fight, win or lose.
He defeated Jorgensen to retain his WEC crown and became the first UFC bantamweight titleholder in a one-sided unanimous decision win.
Cruz (17-1) is on an eight-fight win streak with his only loss coming in his WEC debut against then-champion Urijah Faber at WEC 26 in March of 2007 in a featherweight fight.
Cruz is undefeated in the 135-pound weight division accumulating seven straight wins.
The 25-year old expects a speedy recovery. “It could be six months, but I’m not planning on six months,” Cruz said.
