Lesnar vs. dos Santos set for Vancouver
A heavyweight clash between former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and knockout artist Junior dos Santos is official for UFC 131 this June.
The news was revealed on The Ultimate Insider over at UFC.com.
Lesnar, who last competed at UFC 121, losing his belt to current champion Cain Velasquez, looks to get back on track following his second career loss and earn a shot at fighting for his lost belt. The former professional wrestling superstar took home the heavyweight strap at UFC 91 after defeating Randy Couture and defended it on two occasions, including his decimation of Frank Mir at UFC 100.
Dos Santos, like his upcoming opponent, is also looking for a shot at the heavyweight title. The Brazilian slugger was originally expected to face Velasquez in the champion’s first title defense, but an injury forced the fight to be cancelled. He last competed at UFC 117, defeating Roy Nelson by unanimous decision.
Prior to meeting this June, the two heavyweights are serving as opposing coaches on the latest season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The show is currently being taped and will air on Spike later this year.
UFC 131 is set for Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada’s Rogers Arena on June 11, and the heavyweight showdown will serve as the evening’s main event. Also expected for the card, former heavyweight top contender Shane Carwin will return from surgery looking to ignite a second run at the championship belt.
