Courageous Sanchez scores controversial decision
You can question a lot of things about Diego Sanchez’ fighting style, but you cannot question his heart.
That fact was on display once again during the UFC on Versus 3 main event, a barnburner with Martin Kampmann that earned both fighters the Fight of the Night award. The live crowd wasn’t pleased with the decision and booed Sanchez throughout his post-fight interview. It was an unfortunate aftermath for Sanchez, who sported one of the more battered and gruesome visages in UFC history.
Kampmann struck early and often, using straight rights and left jabs to counter Sanchez and his wild punching style. The Dane also stuffed all but one of Sanchez’ takedowns, leaving the Greg Jackson fighter using wild, winging punches as his only form of offense.
But that offense did enough to influence the judges, who gave the fight to Sanchez 29-28 across the board. A visibly disappointed Kampmann told Joe Rogan that he wasn’t happy with the decision.
“I thought I won the fight,” Kampmann said. “He threw a lot of punches, but not many of them landed. I felt like I landed more.”
Kampmann said he broke his right hand in the third round.
