Velasquez returns to cardiovascular workouts
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been out of action since last October due to an injury suffered in his title win over Brock Lesnar, but Velasquez told HeavyMMA.com on Wednesday night at a Boy’s Town community outreach event that he’s been cleared to return to almost all of his old activities.
“Yeah, I’m back in the gym. I’m limited in what I can do. I can’t punch with my right hand yet,” Velasquez told HeavyMMA.com. “The doctor wants me to take two months to strengthen my right hand.”
For a notorious gym rat like Velasquez, the past seven months have been pure torture. Velasquez says his dream job is to be able to work out for a living, and the shoulder injury suffered in the Lesnar fight has prevented him from doing anything.
Velasquez says he’s ready to make up for lost time, but he has another big day ahead of him. In just under two weeks, the reigning heavyweight champion will get married.
“I’m excited. I think I found the perfect woman to build a great family. It’s going to be a happy day for us,” Velasquez said.
Velasquez will get married, go on a brief honeymoon and then return to the gym. And despite his doctor’s orders to refrain from punching with his right hand, Velasquez says there’s still plenty to accomplish in the gym.
“I can run, I can do footwork. There’s a lot of stuff I can do. In those two months, I can get my body ready for one-hundred percent training.”
Velasquez will defend his title against the winner of the Brock Lesnar/Junior dos Santos bout that takes place at UFC 131. His title defense is expected to take place in Houston this October.
