Cormier, Monson meet in Texas
A heavyweight tilt between Daniel Cormier and Jeff Monson is set for “Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum.”
The promotion made the bout official earlier today.
Currently on an eight-fight winning streak, Monson enters this contest following a busy 2010 and equally busy early 2011. He last fought at “Strength and Honorship Championship 4,” earning a unanimous decision over Maro Perak. Prior to that victory, the UFC veteran earned two decisions and five submissions between July of 2010 and April of this year.
Like his upcoming opponent, Cormier has had a great deal of success as of late, extending his unbeaten record to 7-0 with a unanimous decision victory over Devin Cole last January. The fast-rising heavyweight has yet to face any top heavyweights, however, and Monson will serve as his toughest opponent to date.
The heavyweight fight will likely find a spot on the main card of the June 18 event, “Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum.” The card features a pair of bouts featured in the heavyweight grand prix, including heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers.
