Judges’ monitors approved for UFC 131
Judges’ monitors have been approved by the Vancouver Athletic Commission for use at the upcoming UFC 131 this June.
Sherdog.com was the first to report the news.
In an effort to improve judging throughout mixed martial arts, the use of cageside monitors is something that athletic commissions in both the United States and Canada have sought to implement, though only three UFC events thus far have featured said monitors. They were first used at “UFC on Versus 1,” followed by UFC 117 and UFC 121.
Included in the list of supporters of judges’ monitors is California State Athletic Commissioner George Dodd, who told MMAjunkie.com that no regulations exist to bar the use of said monitors and that it is just another way to improve the scoring of fights.
“There are no regulations that say we can’t have monitors in that area,” Dodd told MMAjunkie.com earlier today. “Sometimes we don’t get the best look because those big bars are in the way. It just gives the judges another angle to score the fight.”
UFC 131 will be the fourth event to give the judges this helpful addition. The card features a heavyweight bout between Junior dos Santos and former champion Brock Lesnar and is set for Vancouver on June 11.
