Machida turns down fight

Despite initial reports to the contrary, it appears that Lyoto Machida has turned down the offer to replace an injured Phil Davis against Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 133.

The event takes place Aug. 6 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

UFC officials began scrambling for a replacement opponent for Evans yesterday. Tito Ortiz was the first fighter contacted, but he turned down the opportunity to get back in the mix and headline a pay per view event in an important fight.

Machida was offered the fight, but has turned it down citing a lack of time to properly prepare for a fight that would have a lasting effect on his career.

UFC President Dana White told Mike Chiappetta from MMAFighting.com that Rich Franklin would not be pulled from his fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to replace Davis, either.
