Askren, Hieron meet in October title bout
A welterweight title fight between champion Ben Askren and top contender Jay Hieron is in the works for Bellator 56 in Kansas City.
MMAjunkie.com reported the news Thursday.
Undefeated as a mixed martial artist, Askren earned his 170 lb. title against Lyman Good at Bellator 33 in October of 2010. His title shot came after winning the second season’s welterweight tournament by defeating Dan Hornbuckle via unanimous decision at Bellator 22. He has yet to defend his title.
Meanwhile, Hieron has made his way into the title picture the same way his upcoming opponent did. He earned three wins in his three tournament fights from Bellator’s fourth season eight-man tourney, earning a win over Rick Hawn in the finals. Hieron is currently on a 10-fight winning streak.
Bellator 56 is set for Kansas City’s Memorial Hall on October 29 and will be televised live on MTV2 and Spike.com. The welterweight bout will serve as the main event of the evening.
