Mendes finally secures long-awaited title shot
The UFC’s surprising January return to Brazil has a main event.
UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his belt against top contender Chad Mendes when the fight promotion returns to the HSBC Arena in early 2012 for UFC 142.
FoxSports.com first reported the story.
Aldo will be seeking to defend his championship for the third consecutive time, having defeated Mark Hominick and Kenny Florian since coming to the promotion when the UFC absorbed World Extreme Cagefighting.
Mendes is undefeated in his mixed martial arts career. He was scheduled to get a title shot in August, but a lingering injury to Aldo forced the contest to be shelved. Mendes chose to fight on the event rather than wait for his title shot, and he defeated Rani Yahya by decision.
